If you're unsure about a competition or have received a prize that perhaps asks you to pay out money then take a look at our scams section in the forums. Here you'll find the latest issues and problems that compers are encountering.

We also get emails from people asking about overseas lottery wins or prizes from sites that are asking for payment and "what should i do?". If you've received such an email (or letter) then the chances are you've received a competition scam!

The best advice as "what to do" is found on the Department of Culture's website and are summarised below.

1. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is!

2. Ask yourself: "How can I win a lottery prize if I've never purchased a ticket?" Normally, if you win something you don't have to pay anything to get your prize such a 'taxes' or 'processing fees'

3. Once you respond to a bogus promotion, your name and address is likely to be placed on other lists for similar scams

4. If asked to use premium rate telephone numbers, be very cautious as these can be expensive and part of the scam
