The first advert for Coronation Street Bingo has arrived from Gala Bingo. The ad has a game show feel to it - imagine cross between What's My Line and the Identity Parade on Nevermind The Buzzcocks. You're asked if you can pick the real Fred Elliott from Corrie - played by John Savident.
Various Freds are shown on screen along with some of the bingo calls that you might hear in the Coronation Street Bingo room. These include Burger In A Bun (81), Giblets Ooooh (20) and Porkpie Heaven (57). We have no idea about number 20 but it sounds funny when Fred says it in his own inimitable style.
And accepting no imitations is the theme for this Gala advert. They're proud of their exclusive themed room and want to make sure that bingo players know that Corrie Bingo is only available at the site. To be honest we find the message a bit odd as having visited various bingo sites over the last week or two we've not seen any who even suggest that they have Coronation Street themed games!
We're also surprised that the ad doesn't feature the iconic Corrie theme. Although Fred Elliott was a larger than life character in the soap he did "die" in 2006 - and some viewers may not remember him. We'd also have liked to have seen a view shots of the Corrie game in action even if it meant having the ubiquitous "winner" laptop shot. The game show feel does also make it seem a bit Jackpotjoy-ish, especially as Gala isn't mentioned until the very end.
Expect to see a lot more of Fred over the next few months, I said expect to see ... (that joke is going to wear very thin!). Hopefully the next Corrie Bingo ad will feature Reg Holdsworth, another of Gala's bingo callers.
