The new Skybet Football League competition gets underway on August 3rd and according to the bookies three former Premier League sides are favourites to top their respective divisions. QPR, Wolves and Portsmouth will be hoping the odds are in their favour but each have a battle royale on their hands.

QPR are 6/1 at Ladbrokes to take the Championship title whilst Reading and Bolton are second at 9/1. Leicester, Nottingham Forest ad Watford follow whilst Wigan, now managed by Owen Coyle are 12/1. QPR and Reading will need to get off to a good start if they're going to make a swift return to the Premier League.

Nigel Adkins has good knowledge of the division, but does he have the side to match his ambition? At Southampton he had a solid team with momentum gained by promotion from League One - but even then The Saints almost missed out as the season ended. Reading should be in the play-off mix. If QPR struggle in early games then expect Harry Redknapp to jump ship by December. In fact the biggest surprise is that he's still in charge at Loftus Road.

The Championship is a tough league and a club needs stability, unity and a manager who knows the division well to succeed. Our tip, at least for promotion, is Nottingham Forest. Despite boardroom issues they've got a strong side and with Billy Davis in charge should mount a challenge to finally return to the top division.

QPR only need to look at Wolves to realise how tough life in The Championship can be for teams relegated from The Premiership. The Wanderers are favourites to bounce back from League One after a dismal season last year, however it will be another culture shock for them. Smaller teams will see Wolves as a major scalp and a bad start can play havoc with your promotion aspirations. Wolves are 7/2 to take the title with Peterborough 9/1 along with Brentford. Bristol City who are our tip for the title are 11/1.

If Wolves feel life has been unfair, then a quick look down to League Two and the position of Portsmouth should make them think again. Pompey have finally come out of administration and a series of ownership woes but they now face a tough season at the likes of Fleetwood, Oxford, Hartlepool, Morecambe and Accrington.

Although they are the biggest team in League Two that doesn't automatically mean promotion is nailed on for them! Mind you there is a feelgood factor at Portsmouth since the "fan's buyout" and a good start could give them a platform from which to build. A bad start and signs of financial issues could derail an early return back up the leagues. Ladbrokes have Pompey at 9/2 to be champions with Chesterfield and Fleetwood Town, our tip, following at 8/1.
