If you're of a certain age you may well remember that back in the 80s bingo wars raged between the tabloids. The Mirror and The Sun used the game as a ratings weapon and constantly tried to outdo each other with bigger prizes. It's all a distant memory now with online gaming taking centre stage but thanks to British Telly Treats on Youtube here's a bit of a blast from the past.
The advert invites you to play Britain's Biggest Bingo with over £1.3million to be won in The Sun, with £50,000 on offer every week. The clip also shows some of the previous winners as well as would be players staring up at a massive golden BINGO! It's a far cry from today's online bingo TV adverts - although it probably holds it's own against some of the efforts we see.
British Telly Treats suggest that the advert is from around 1981, the time when newspaper bingo started and helped reverse the fortunes of tabloids. But what of Sun Bingo today? We would suggest that the crown of Britain's Biggest Bingo isn't something The Sun couldn't claim today. However, we think they still do a newspaper game as we do see people searching for bingo numbers - and the online version is doing OK and there's still plenty of big money on offer every week to players.
There probably won't be a million pound winner playing the online version though. Instead online players have to make do with the chance to win a few thousand pound jackpots. These usually take the shape of progressives in individual rooms, but occasionally Sun Bingo will put out a big money game as they did during December. Most certainly times have changed and we wonder how the game today will look to those writing about it 30 years from now. For now we'll be keeping our eyes out for more bingo blasts from the past.
