Johnson & Watson Favourites To Lead Tories & Labour
Added On 27th June 2016
With Westminster in turmoil following the Leave's victory in the EU Referendum, political betting has suddenly come up under the spotlight. The departure of David Cameron as Prime Minister combined with the attempted coup on Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party means that there are new markets opening up for punters.
Unsurprisingly Boris Johnson is the current favourite to succeed Cameron as leader of the Tories. Johnson is 10/11 with Skybet with Theresa May following in second place at 9/4. Johnson as we know backed the Brexit vote whilst May was in the Remain camp. Can she get enough support to quash Boris' political ambitions? And if she is appointed how will that effect the Referendum result?
If Johnson is pushed aside then his Leave running mates could be in line to take advantage. Andrea Leadsom and Michael Gove are third and fourth favourites at 9/1 and 12/1 respectively with Skybet. Liam Fox follows also at 12s but he's still umming and ahhing about running for the job. Chancellor George Osbourne is at 20/1 but it's unlikely he will consider running for the top post.
Tom Watson Next For Labour
The Labour Party are doing their utmost to follow The Tories and create a leadership vacancy. Corbyn has so far resisted any calls to quit and in fact seems defiant in his position. But what if he has been wounded that his role as leader is now untenable? Who will be most likely to takeover?
Skybet believe that the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Tom Watson, is favourite. They have him at 9/2 whilst Hilary Benn, who's departure from the shadow cabinet sparked the mass resignations of colleagues, is at 5/1. Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley Central, is described as the right kind of "Anti-Boris", could be an interesting choice to back - he's at 6/1.
For a long shot then 18/1 for Stephen Kinnock is not a bad punt. Kinnock would be following in his father's footsteps as Labour Leader - and would be hoping to go one better and actually takeover as Prime Minister.
