In case you've been living in a bubble, a few weeks ago The UK voted in a referendum. The result of that referendum was in favour to leave The EU and that sparked a chain of resignations and surprises. The biggest resignation though was from David Cameron who opted to step down as Prime Minister. This decision meant that bingo would now feel the effects of Brexit.
Theresa's Den - 10
Now on the grand scale of things the effect of Brexit on bingo is pretty small. However with David Cameron departing Number 10 it does mean that the bingo call for the number 10 has now changed. As you're all aware each bingo number has it's own nickname: leg's eleven, top of the shop, two fat ladies etc. Well number 10's nickname relates to whoever occupies 10 Downing Street - Maggie's Den, Tony's Den, Gordon's Den etc.
For the last six years it's been Cameron's Den - we're not sure why it hasn't been David's but perhaps it just doesn't sound right? Anyway now David has gone and Theresa May has taken over, Brexit means that for now at least Number 10 is Theresa's Den. How long that will be the case we don't know. Thankfully Boris Johnson didn't make it to Downing Street as Boris' Den or Johnson's Den just sound wrong in so many different ways.
Leaving The EU - 52
Whilst looking over the traditional bingo calls we did wonder whether Brexit could be responsible for some more changes. For example, the referendum was won by 52% to 48% - so how about 'Leaving The EU - 52'? As there's no prerequisite that nicknames have to rhyme we could also have 'Wanted To Stay - 48'! There's also potential for 'Clause - 50' in honour of the article in The Lisbon Treaty that needs to be activated before The UK can start the exit process.
At time of writing The UK hasn't instigated Brexit. What that means is that currently there are 28 countries in The European Union, so "Still In The EU - 28" could be an appropriate call to reflect The UK's involvement. Some may argue that the traditional slang for the number - "In A State" - is perhaps more than appropriate.
Brexit Bingo Calls
- Theresa's Den - 10 (Downing Street)
- Still In The EU - 28 (number of countries)
- Wanted To Stay - 48 (voted to remain)
- Clause - 50 (Article 50 of Lisbon Treaty)
- Leaving The EU - 52 (voted to leave)
Beyond the above though we started to struggle. We couldn't think up anything suitable for Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson or some of the Leave campaigns claims, such as the £350m a week NHS money. Mind you if someone invented 350 ball bingo then "It's A Lie" could be a suitable call.
