Traditional Bingo Calls Given A Modern Update

Published On 30th December 2016 - This Content May Have Expired.

Every now and then someone will seek to try and make changes to the traditional bingo calls. Back in 2003, for example, Butlins tried to bring in calls such as Gareth Gates for number 8. This year it's the turn of Mecca Bingo who are aiming to make the popular game hip and trendy with some updated calls.

According to reports in today's papers, at least 15 of bingo's traditional calls will be adapted and trialed at clubs during the start of 2017. So what calls do players have to look forward to next year?

  • 1. YOLO (You only Live Once) - Kelly's Eye
  • 6. Little Mix - Tom Mix
  • 8. Tinder Date - Garden Gate
  • 11. Eyebrows on Fleek - Legs Eleven
  • 17. Selfie Queen - Dancing Queen
  • 22. I Don't Know About You - Two Little Ducks
  • 25. Adele - Duck & Dive
  • 48. Tag A Mate - Four Dozen
  • 66. Historic US Route - Clickety Click
  • 69. Netflix & Chill - Anyway Up
  • 88. Moobs - Two Fat Ladies

Apparently references to more modern terms such as YOLO, "On Fleek" and "Netflix & Chill" will make bingo more attractive to younger customers. We're not so sure! Firstly why mess around with the things like "Legs Eleven", "Two Little Ducks" and "Two Fat Ladies"? These go hand in hand with bingo and are ingrained on the history of the game - so why change it, especially as according to the reports calls are rarely used in club games these days?

Out of all the suggested changes the only one which we think genuinely works is "Little Mix", but here's the thing - what happens if the girl group split up in 2017? Not only will lots of teenagers be upset but the new trendy bingo call becomes redundant! Adele may well be around the music scene longer than Little Mix, but how many people will pick up on the reference to 25?

As you can probably tell, we're not a big fan of people messing about with the traditional bingo calls. Yes it's a bit of fun making suggestions for new ones and it gets some nice news coverage for the brand involved, but that's about it. Surprisingly a Daily Mail comment actually sums things up quite well for a change.. "if it ain't broke". Now we're not keen on that phrase, change is good, but change is only good if change improves on what we have. And in this case it doesn't!

In short, these new bingo calls are just gimmicks and hold no weight against the traditional calls. We'd be amazed to see any of them adopted any further than the walls of the Mecca Bingo clubs where they are bring trialed.

Let us know what you think of the suggested call changes? We'd love to know.
