When it comes to setting the bar - whether it's genius to controversial - in betting for TV ads or social media then you need to look no further than Paddy Power. They've released a brand new campaign for the footbal season and it follows the plight of a disabled football supporter attending an away match.
The advert uses a re-worded version of Spandau Ballet's Gold. We don't know if this is the reason why Tony Hadley decided to leave or whether now he's gone the remaining Spandau's are desperate for cash. Either way it's still a catchy tune and Paddy Power have adapted it well.
The ad kicks off with football supporters on a train going to an away day. The disabled supporter laments that travelling is a chore and that he's heard all Bazza's stories before. That said he still loves matchday despite all the bums in his face - there's some clever lucky pants product placement at this point!
The song continues and covers the supporter heading to the disabled toilets - which inevitably are used by able bodied folks - before finally getting the best seats in the house on the touchline. At this point the Spandau's Gold becomes Goal and "Best Seat In The House Guy" is enjoying the match, his bets are coming in and the home fans are leaving!
It's a fun advert - as you'd expect from Paddy Power - and great to see them use a disabled supporter in a positive way. The song lyrics are a bit ropey at times but we do like the chorus section.
One thing the advert doesn't mention is the free Hotshot Jackpot game that has relaunched for the new season. Login each week and predict the first goalscorers and you could win £250,000 or more.
