Conference Bingo Card Goes Viral
Published On 10th April 2018
Buzzword Bingo isn't a new concept. Many people, including ourselves, have attached a bingo card to an activity, like a TV show or event, to enhance the fun. It's also not unknown for bored employees to play a little buzzword bingo to get through business meetings. The latest addition to all this fun is Conference Bingo.

Conferences can be pretty tedious events. I've been to several over the years and few stand out in the memory. However, there was one at Keele University that I opted to leave early because it was awful. I think that may well have been the start of my realisation that academia wasn't for me!
You Have No Idea What You're Talking About
Anyway, the conference may well have been a little more exciting with a bingo card. Imogene Dudley created a bingo card for the European Social Science History Conference 2018. It's "numbers" can be applied to other events and therefore should now be a standard addition to conference packs.
Amongst my personal favourites are "you have no idea what they are talking about", "presenter blatently goes over time", "presenter reads directly from powerpoint slides" and the room air-conditioning. Missing numbers include "presenter finishes with half the session to spare" and "presenter references noisy drunkeness that kept him awake".
The Missing Conference Bingo Numbers
And before you ask, yes the presenter in question was me! At a conference in New Orleans I had to do a colleague's presentation. Scared of getting it wrong, I memorised the whole presentation. A mixture of nerves and being over prepared meant that I delivered the 30 minute presentation in just 15!
The drunkeness occured at a conference in Bristol. I had the 9am slot on day 2 for my presentation. Not a good slot as everyone gets drunk the night before and therefore doesn't attend or doesn't care less what you're saying. It's an even worse slot when you've not drank and been kept up all night by noisy conference goers. So, at the end of my presentation I thanked the "drunk people in Room X" for my lack of sleep.
It didn't go down well, but it'd have made a heck of a "number" to cross off on any conference bingo card.
