Paddy Power Pay Out On Celtic As Champions
Published On 6th August 2018
The Scottish Premier League season is just one game old and Paddy Power have seen enough. The controversial bookies have spotted another clever marketing ploy and are paying out on Celtic winning the league. This move will no doubt see reactions from Rangers, Aberdeen and Hearts supporters who will be furious about the bookmaker's decision.

Paddy Power announced their decision to pay out on Celtic as Scottish Premier League Champions via social media. They also outlined their decision on their blog. They explain that Celtic are already 1/12 to retain their title with Rangers at 9/1 and Aberdeen at 20/1. Note that those teams are second and third favourites so they're miles behind Celtic.
1/12 Favourites
After watching Steven Gerrard's Rangers draw 1-1, after conceding a last minute goal against Aberdeen, Paddy Power can't see Celtic slipping up. The bookie could still end up with egg on their face, but given that not many punters will be betting at 1/12 then the payouts will be minimal. Especially when compared to the amount of publicity the move will generate.
This isn't the first time Paddy Power have paid out early on a side winning their respective league. Last season they paid out in December on Manchester City being Premier League Champions. That worked out well, but a similar decision in 2003 backfired when payouts were made for Arsenal, but Manchester United went on to take the title.
Adding Spice To The Mix
This decision is definitely a clever, but calculated one, by Paddy Power. Whilst Rangers are second favourites for the SPL title they - or Aberdeen, Hearts, anyone else - would need to have to pull up some serious trees to challenge Celtic. At the same time Brendan Rodgers' side would need to go on a disastrous run of form. The chances of both these events happening are quite slim.
However, all eyes will now be on the SPL just in case things start to heat up. Rangers won't take this lying down and it may actually spur them on to "up their game". Other teams may feel the same. Whatever happens, the winners will be Paddy Power who have trumped their bookie rivals yet again - and at hardly any cost to themselves.
