Will Mourinho Win The Premier League Sack Race

Published On 4th October 2018

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, is surprised that Jose Mourinho still remains as manager of Manchester United. Equally surprising is that Mourinho is the favourite Premier League manager to be sacked, and to date no other manager from the top flight has been given their cards. So will Jose hold on to his job or will be be the winner of this season's sack race?

Mourinho is currently 4/7 at Coral to become the next Premier League Manager to leave. Given recent results and reports coming out of Old Trafford it would be a miracle if Jose remains in charge. The issues with Pogba, Martial, Valencia and Sanchez won't just go away overnight - and each and every bad result will cast scrutiny on Jose's tenure. Therefore we're going to predict Jose will leave Old Trafford - the big question is when and will it be before another manager departs?

Warnock vs Hughes

Coral have Neil Warnock as second favourite in the 'Sack Race' market. He's 7/1 to lose his job but we think this is based on Cardiff's lowly position in the Premier League. Warnock would be incredibly unlucky to bring up another team only to lose his job after a handful of games. He deserves his chance and Cardiff's board may well give him time.

Another manager in the firing line is Southampton's Mark Hughes. He's 9/1 with Coral to be the next Premier League manager to leave. Hughes did well in keeping The Saints up but his first full season hasn't started well. Results haven't gone well and supporters are already restless. However, Saints need some stability and the side's current woes don't just fall on the shoulders of Hughes.

10/1 On Puel

One manager that knows about being sacked by Southampton is Claude Puel and he's 10/1 in the current 'Sack Race'. According to recent reports Puel was one game away from losing his job, but a win at Huddersfield saved him. Puel's tenure at The King Power Stadium has been a mixed bag and there are still question marks over his future.

The vultures may well have settled down, but they'll soon be circling if results don't go Leicester's way. It's for this reason that we think 10/1 is a good bet on Puel. As a manager he deserves time to build his team, but that's not the way The Premier League works. Also worth considering are David Wagner (16/1) and Rafa Benitez (12/1). Benitez would most probably walk than be sacked, but Wagner's Huddersfield need to turn things round soon otherwise his position may be in jeopardy.
