Will Jackpotjoy Have To Change Gear

Article Updated On 22nd October 2018

Top Gear have announced that Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness will be joining the show for the 2019 series. They will take up their roles alongside Chris Harris. Matt LeBlanc is leaving the show whilst Rory Reid loses his position as a main presenter. So what has this driving related news got to do with bingo?

Royal Changes At Jackpotjoy

Well, the appointment of McGuinness as a Top Gear presenter may put a question mark over his Royal Role at Jackpotjoy. It's been two years since Paddy took over the position from Barbara Windsor. Sadly ill health means that Babs won't ever return as The Queen Of Bingo. This means that Paddy is in the chair but that may well have to change.

The BBC has it's own editorial guidelines and there's a section on "Commercial Advertising, Promotions and Endorsement". Whilst these guidelines don't forbid "on-air talent" from endorsing gambling, there are suggestions that it may not be totally suitable in case it damages the reputation of The BBC.

The guidelines state that "there are some products or services which the BBC would not wish its presenters to promote as the association might be damaging to the BBC's reputation". These products include gambling and we'd be very surprised if Paddy would be able to take on the prestigous Top Gear role and maintain his position with Jackpotjoy.

A New Royal Or Time For Change

If we reflect back on when Barbara Windsor was originally announced as The Queen Of Bingo, this was done moments after her final appearance on Eastenders. Admittedly she has returned to the show as a guest, but her final appearance in 2016 was roughly around the time her Royal role was coming to an end.

Assuming that McGuinness does have to leave the Royal Household of Jackpotjoy then that opens the door for someone else to take the role. Alternatively it could Jackpotjoy an opportunity to retire the idea. Paddy was well utilised during the transition period but in the last 12 months has hardly been used. It would seem odd for JPJ to go through a similar process with another "royal" only to under use them in the same way.

Now that Paddy's Top Gear position has been announced we anticipate that his Jackpotjoy position will become clearer very soon. We'll be watching JPJ with great interest!
