The Special One Joins Paddy Power Games
Article Updated On 1st October 2019
Paddy Power are well known for creating a buzz with their advertising. Most recently they stirred things up with Huddersfield Town and football sponsorship. However they've notched things up a level with their new campaign for Paddy Power Games. Not only have they created a huge welcome offer - but they've added The Special One, Jose Mourinho, into the mix.
The advert above plays on Jose's belief that he's the special one. However, don't think for a moment that this is a serious piece of advertising. The advert starts with Jose reading a newspaper with a headline asking "What Next For The Special One". We then see Mourinho moving through his house explaining why he is special. The whole advert plays on "the special one" moniker and there are some delightful 'easter eggs' throughout the clip. Watch closely and you'll see that the dog is named Didier (Didier Dogba) and there's a packet of Special J cereal on the shelves.
I Love JT
Watch even closer and you might spot a I Love JT note on the fridge and a bottle of special sauce on the worktop. Amongst the books on Jose's shelves you'll spot Football Punditry for Beginners, Obscure Metaphors and The Voyeur. There's also The Three Seasons by Vivaldi - not the four - but a reference to Jose's three Premier League Titles. On the same shelf is a red bus which is no doubt a nod to Jose's tendancy to park the bus in selected games.
You might also notice that when Jose walks past his 2006 League Winner medal, but no medal is in the case. Mourinho threw his medal into the crowd when Chelsea won the title after beating Manchester United 3-0. The medal has since been sold at auction. Back to the advert and Jose tells us he's been successful in Milan and Madrid, but there is a nod towards his time at Manchester United. He notes that not all great achievements such as Premier League Runners-Up get rewarded.
The main point of the advert is to highlight the daily jackpots that are up for grabs at Paddy Power Games. In the advert we see Jose winning a £40,000 jackpot playing on his mobile. He says that's becuse he's special but the taxi driver soon puts him in his place. Daily jackpots have to be won each and every day - before 11pm - so they're not just for The Special One.
