Sky Lotto To Close Down This Month

Published On 11th February 2021

Just under 12 months ago we told you about a brand new free to play game over at Sky. Imaginatively called Sky Lotto it was a free prize draw that offered chances to win prizes based on lotto numbers. The aim of the game was to select six numbers and match them all to win the main jackpot. Whilst the free game offered a top prize of £250,000 players could boost the prize up to £1million if they wagered 50p. There were two games - a daily draw and a Friday super draw - but small prizes could be win for matching at least two balls.

However there is bad news for fans of this particular free game as Sky have now announced that the competition is ending. In a post made on Twitter they have informed players that the site will close on 1st March 2021. The final daily draw will take place on 11th February with the final Super Lotto Draw taking place on the 12th. The site will remain open after this so that players can redeem any prizes that they have won. The full announcement is below:

Sky Lotto Closing Statement

"Unfortunately Sky Lotto will be closing on Monday 1st March. At Sky Betting & Gaming we're always looking at ways to improve and evolve our products to make sure you get the best possible experience. With this in mind, we've decided to focus our attention on the things you like the most, like Prize Machine on Sky Vegas and introducing more exciting rooms on Sky Bingo. Remember we also have other free-to-play games like Super6 and ITV7 for you to enjoy.

The final Daily Lotto draw will take place on Thursday 11th February, followed by the final Super Lotto draw on Friday 12th February. The Sky Lotto site will remain open for you to redeem any prizes won until Monday 1st March. Following the site closure you will not be able to access the Sky Lotto website. You will still be able to access your account and any funds using your Sky Lotto login details at Sky Bet, Sky Vegas, Sky Casino, Sky Poker or Sky Bingo."

Why Has Sky Lotto Closed?

The reasons for the closure haven't been disclosed but we suspect that the competition wasn't working in terms of converting free entries to paid entries. And we're not surprised because why spend 50p for no chance of winning a million quid when you can play for free and have no chance of winning £250,000! Having looked through Twitter there isn't much discussion on Sky Lotto but there are a few comments that suggest the site wasn't worth visiting. In November one poster said "Haven’t won once since @_skylotto changed their prizes and made it more difficult to win."

Another tweet said a similar story "getting pointless playing this now!!! Can go days and days without winning anything lately!". We don't like to say we told you so, but we told you so. In our review when Sky Lotto launched we said "free games such as these can quickly become stale" and that the "odds of winning are quite remote and the smaller prizes aren't that exciting either". That said it is sad to see another 'lotto' prize draw close. The format adopted by Pick My Postcode seems to work for them but no one else can create anything that can compete, not even a big betting company like Sky.
