Loquax Competitions Update – July 2024

Be Lucky! Be Free!

A lot can happen in a month! Since our last update there’s been a General Election, The Euros, Wimbledon, Tour de France and a whole bunch of stuff involving Biden and Trump. In comping circles the Superlucky Lucky Legends Subscription service is now up and running. For those compers who aren’t particularly keen on paying to access purchase necessary competitions, text competitions etc and perhaps feel like they’re missing out then you might want to check us out. At time of writing we’ve got over 150 Purchase Necessary comps from popular brands such as Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. There’s also a handful of Text Entry/Phone Entry comps including those being run by Tesco and a whole bunch of promotions from popular radio stations. It might only be lists that can be organised by date, site, prize etc and it might only have a tracking system too that you can refer back to, but it is free to use. Oh and you can chat about any of these comps via the forum and that’s free too. Anyway hopefully some of you find it a useful alternative to paying out money.

Laziest Person In The World Competition

One thing we like to do with the blog is seek out some strange competition stories from around the web and we’ve found another one. Residents of the village of Brezna in Montenegro are getting ready for their annual “Laziest Citizen” competition that’s due to take place in August. The contest was started to mock the myth that Adriatic people are lazy. According to an article on East Coast Radio the aim of the contest is to out-lazy your fellow contestants. This is done simply by lying on a mat for as long as possible. Thankfully you don’t have to just lie there! Contestants are permitted to use devices (perfect for comping) or read a book. In addition they can have a toilet break every eight hours and also have three meals per day. How long do you think you’d last? Last year’s winners, Lidija Marković and Filip Knežević, both lasted an incredible 50 days for a prize of 1000 Euros! The previous record was 5 days! This is also a low entry competition because last year it attracted just 21 entries (The Guardian).

If You’re Appy & You Know It

Just after we posted our June update we made a few minor changes to the competition listings. Firstly we changed the WWW entry type to ‘Online’. We’ve used WWW as a prefix for online competitions since 2002 and finally decided that it was high time to bring it up to date. One reason for that is because we now have an option to indicate if a competition is being run ‘Offline‘. For example you have to take a test drive, visit a store or head to a place like McDonald’s. Talking of McDonald’s, their competitions usually require you to download their app and sometimes that wasn’t obvious on the listings. We’ve now got an ‘App‘ indicator to help you. Don’t like those kind of comps? No problem just update Your Preferences to hide the things you don’t want to see. Some people don’t like seeing Rafflecopter comps or Gleam comps. However since we introduced those categories on Loquax there are other similar competition plug-ins like Rafflepress and KingSumo. Because Rafflecopters are less popular than Gleam we’ve now updated the Rafflecopter section to accommodate similar plug-ins. Finally we made a few minor tweaks to the wording under the comps on the listings. Many just said “visit site to enter” but we’ve re-worded them to be more relevant. Minor things but important to keep things running smoothly for you.

Manifesting Prizes

Manifesting is described by Vox as “the practice of thinking aspirational thoughts with the purpose of making them real”. This might be something as simple as hoping to find a parking space close to your destination or perhaps something as grand as winning the lottery. Personally I find all the reach out to the universe, dream boards etc a load of “woo” because from a scientific point of view we are mere specs in the cosmos and The Universe has a lot more important stuff to do than assist everyone who’s currently manifesting. That’s not to say that a positive approach to life and comping is a bad thing, it’s not, but in the grand scheme of things we’re merely shadows and dust (Gladiator). But some people do swear by these things and if you want more insight on the subject from a comping perspective then check out the latest A Little Friendly Competition podcast. Sophie and Naomi “delve in to the art of manifesting prizes. Look at some scientific research that backs this up and share some of their own stories”. If you’re not a fan of podcasts then you can find out more about manifesting at Self.com. If manifesting has helped your comping successes then do let us know in the comments.

Deal Or No Deal

If you’re into manifesting then Deal Or No Deal might well be the TV show for you. First off you’ll need to manifest your place on the show, but then once on the show can you then make your dream of picking the big money box a reality? Getting on the show though is the hard part and manifestation alone won’t get you there. You’re going to have to apply first and hope you’re picked from the thousands of others also manifesting their place on the show. The good news is that we can tell you that Deal Or No Deal is back open for applications for the new series. If you’d like to potentially be standing next to Stephen Mulhern and selecting boxes then you need to get your application in before the 1st November 2024. Our advice is to get your application in sooner rather than later. According to the information on the website there are two filming periods (16th Sept-11th Oct  and 11th Nov – 19th Nov) so applicants will be selected during the process. Travel expenses and hotel accommodation, if required, will be covered by the production team, but note you could be required to spend up to 12 days filming.

Win A House Upgrade

Anyway we don’t have much time for manifesting because we’re too busy running Loquax! It’s been a while now since we moved from vBulletin to the Xenforo platform. Creating a new forum and site from scratch takes a lot of time but it takes even longer to transition an existing one. However, finally we’re about to move Win A House into the Xenforo set-up. For many users this probably isn’t going to be that exciting as not a great deal will change in terms of content. However there are two changes that are exciting. Firstly the bits that you don’t see (our admin section) has been developed to hopefully make life easier by keeping everything together. Secondly we’re using the forum for Win A House content which will allow users to comment on reviews using Loquax as opposed to Facebook’s comment plug-in. The Facebook comment system, which is the same one we have on the blog at the moment, is at best flakey. Switching to our in-house system means we’re no longer reliant on Facebook. It should also mean we’re able to reintroduce the tracking system for win a house comps that had to be deactivated when we switched forums.

New Zealand Win A House Competition Fails

So far there has been 54 new win a house competitions in The UK since the start of the year. Many of these return a property prize winner due to the fact that prizes are guaranteed on platforms like Omaze, Bounty Competitions and others. Of course not everything goes to plan as we’ve seen in the past with platforms like Win Amazing and Win A Nottingham Villa. That said it still doesn’t stop others jumping on the bandwagon and this month we’ve seen new sites, House Giveaways and Ruffle, enter the sector. How they will get on remains to be seen. House competitions aren’t just a UK phenomena though, and neither are house competitions that flop. Stuff report that Dave Jaques had hoped to raffle off a $2 million house with the aim to raise funds for The Suicide Reduction Trust (SRT). However the raffle didn’t attract enough public interest despite sales of $350,000 and therefore refunds were issued. According to MNZ though it seems as though the host actually didn’t own the property that was due to be given away, instead aiming to purchase it from the sales of tickets. That kind of reminds us of a site we blogged about earlier in the year, and unfortunately we’ve got to talk about them again.

Splash Competitions Replaces Countdown Competitions

We’d love to avoid “outing” sites but there’s no other option sometimes due to lack of alternatives to deal with issues. Last month we wrote that we’d hoped to have seen the back of Countdown Competitions. That’s the pay to enter prize draw site that we caught faking ticket sales and offering prizes like 4 x £50,000 that they were never giving away. The owner then went on to post fake reviews on Trustpilot. After that though the site stopped operating and has since disappeared. However we were surprised to see the owner of the site return to Loquax and create a new account. This time it was for a site called Splash Competitions. We have banned them but have checked in on the new site to see if the owner has learnt anything from previous operations. The answer seems to be “no”. They still think buying followers to boost their Facebook following is good and it does seem that they’re also doing the same old bump up the pretend ticket sales. Hopefully anyone visiting the new site will do a bit of due diligence before signing up or spending money.
