Judith and William Brown are giving entrants the chance to win their pub restaurant business in Monmouthshire. The Raglan Arms is described as award-winning and has plenty of 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor. Despite launching in May and also getting some media coverage we've only just seen this competition (July 2021) which suggests it's not gained that much traction. The business is located in Llandenny and close to The Usk Valley and Raglan Castle. We don't know the valuation of the business so we've estimated it at a conservative £500,000. The Move Market suggests a valuation of £659,000 and the property was last sold (according to the same site) for £425,000 in 2015.

About The Property

The Raglan Arms boasts seating for over 100 across it's restaurant, conservatory area, lounge bar and deck area. The property also has four bedrooms. Apart from that though there's very little information. For example are there live-in quarters for the owners, does stock and furnishings come with the business etc. The competition does say that the new owners will have "no start up debts" but a new owner will need stock, staff etc. The competition site also provides no details about running costs, profit/loss, and any effect that the pandemic has had on the business. Whilst these may not influence people's decision to purchase tickets it's useful to know what you're potentially getting into should you win. Stamp duty and some legal expenses (up to £3000 + VAT) will be met by the host.

How To Enter

Tickets for the competition cost £10. To enter you need to answer a question which is a "guess how many dried butter beans are in the glass whisky bottle" one. To help you there's a multiple choice option and the hosts provide some dimensions which may (or may not) help you with your calculations. We may try and figure out the sum at some point - or someone may kindly post the answer in the comments. Once you've selected your answer and the number of tickets you'd like to buy - up to a maximum of 10 - it's simply a case of completing your details and making a purchase. As far as we can see there isn't a no purchase option available.

95000 Ticket Target

The hosts aim to sell 95,000 tickets in order to giveaway their business (total revenue £950,000 although some of this will include booking fees of 50p per entry). The entry page does mention a closing date of "by 8th July 2021" which makes us think that this competition has already been extended. The closing date is the first week in October (now extended until January 2022). According to the terms: "The Promoter reserves the right to extend the Closing Date by up to a period of 3 (three) months". If insufficient tickets sell then the cash alternative we believe will be 70%. The hosts will take up to 30% for admin, marketing and legal costs plus the terms indicate they'll not take any money for personal gain.

Our Verdict

This isn't the first Welsh Pub to try the raffle route. The Plash Inn in West Carmarthenshire launched Win A Pub In Wales way back in 2009. Sadly the competition failed so can The Raglan Arms fair any better? In our view raffling a business is a lot harder sell than raffling a house. Do entrants want to run a pub/restaurant? How do they run it if they win? Can they sell it on easily? These are all factors to consider and those considerations will limit the number of interested entries. Our view is that it's going to take a lot of effort and marketing to hit the 95,000 ticket sales.
