Christmas Is Cancelled – I’m Advent Comping!

Posted on: December 7th, 2011 by Jason 13 Comments

With most of our time spent updating competitions, developing the site, writing blogs, posting on Facebook, retweeting and generally messing about, there’s little time left to do a bit of comping. In fact The Loquax Team rarely enter that many competitions. But inspired by some big winners posting on our forums and morbid curiousity, I ventured into the world of advent competitions.

In part this was to test out our brilliant advent competition tracking system, but also to just see how much time it took to go through what amounts to around 300 odd competitions to choose from. How some compers have time for these things I don’t know!!!!

The easiest to enter – and an obvious first stop – was Loquax’s own advent competition, sponsored by Groupon. Of couse, I can’t win that one, but it was a one click and done! A dream for any comper to enter and if you’re a regular Loquax user you should be there first every day during advent. (End Plug LOL).

After that it was a case of just working down the list and seeing what’s on offer. As the Loquax Advent list gives you a rough idea of prizes it’s quite easy to be a bit more picky. If you’re a guy without kids then that can actually be a benefit as that wipes out quite a few of them.

That said there are some decent prizes around – and it wasn’t long before I was opening doors and filling in details. Thankfully there aren’t too many hoops to jump through on most sites as that saves a lot of time. Actually that’s also a shame as the advents that got you to play a little game in past were a lot of fun.

I found that only a couple of the advents were a problem. For example, Malibu’s on Facebook didn’t want to submit – and Haribo didn’t want to play ball either (probably both telling me that booze and sweets are bad for you). However, most of the time was consumed by filling in forms and waiting around for “password reminders”!

Time flies by when you’re advent comping – and then you realise that you’re only half way through the list and that there’s a boat load of Facebook Advents to wade through. The social media competitions are a bit hit and miss in my opinion. Unless you’re about between 9am and 5pm you’re going to miss out on a few of them. There’s also quite a few running their daily giveaways outside FB guidelines – naughty little elves!

All in all working my way through the list, checking sites, deciding what to enter, waiting for passwords and swearing at the laptop as flashy advents slowed it down saw a good couple of hours plus change vanish pretty quickly.

Since then it’s been a lot quicker to get through them – but then I am being even more selective, have login issues sorted and have form filling sorted a bit better (typing Welsh place names gives you a disadvantage). Plus our tracker works like a dream!!

In terms of prizes I’m liking Axa PP, Classic FM (except the Cliff Richard CD), Food Network, Haribo (for the sweets), La Senza (for the holiday), Next, Recombu.com, Ted Baker, Tesco, UKTV and TK Maxx. On Facebook it’s Barclaycard, Bollinger, Laithwaites, Virgin Wines, Remingtons, Russell Hobbs, LEC and Malibu (a few drink ones then lol).

Of course there’s plenty more – and to just compound “advent misery” – a number of sites have now brought in games. Comet for example have launched Pop Up Prezzie, Kingsmill have Pop up Toasters, Cadbury’s are passing the parcel – and I’ve still a boatload of M&S pressies to open.

If that wasn’t enough… we’ve still got the 12 Days of Christmas countdown comps that may appear from the 12th December too!

Let’s face it, there are just so many competitions that there’s only one thing to do – cancel Christmas! Ok, that might not go down so well in some households, so perhaps postpone it until the 25th January when (hopefully) things have settled down.

I’m off to stock up on coffee and proplus – there are some more advents to enter!

Love it and I haven’t even started, but going to give it ago later, and yes perfect excuse for cancelling Xmas, I can’t seem to find time to open the m&s parcels even bribed my son to try opening them all last night he managed 50+ but even he gave up. Good Luck x

As probably the ultimate Bah Humbug person when it comes to Christmas, this is probably the most perfect excuse I could find for cancelling Christmas! What a great idea!

I am being really selective with my entries. I just do not have the time to enter everything that I would like to win.

The advent tracker is a great help.

I am struggling with Facebook ones because they don’t seem to contact the winner. It is difficult to keep plodding through looking for your name.

I have already won a case of wine from Laithwaites, which is getting delivered on Friday. So lets hope my efforts continue to be productive.

I stayed up until 3am last night to get a head start on todays advents…. was it worth it, well nope, not really. Grouchy and grumpy all day and not a win in sight! Am going to be far more selective now as it’s just not worth trying to do absolutely everything.

Great article. It’s true there are too many advent competitions this year and just not enough time to enter them all. I do like Loquax’s cross so I can grey out the ones I don’t want to enter. Usually I do go to all this effort and then win nothing! Still got to try.

I’m loving it and hating it, all rolled into one. I dont think I’ve ever seen so many comps at one time as what there are now. I’ve dedicated 10pm- 1am as comping time each night from now until Christmas. I got wise this year and made sure Santa was prepared weeks ago just so that I could comp in December whilst the masses run around in retail hell. Haven’t won anything yet but I will. Top of the wishlist is a Loquax mug.

A big thanks to Team Loquax for all their hard work. Have a very Merry Christmas.

The loquax tracker for the advents is great it’s saved me loads of time as I’ve managed to cut out lots of the ones that I’m not interested in, but I’ve still been sat here entering the others for the last couple of hours.

Brilliant Jason, although I have spotted your name on a winners list so it has paid off. I find on my working days I really am being very selective, also weekends through a spanner into the works as some are different. Shame you decied not to take part in Secret Santa theres a cliff richard cd waiting for you somewhere.

And now you know what we meant when we said you were being too efficient. 😉 Lets not forget thats only the advent comps, you still have the closing today and haggis hunting if you ever get anytime. Oh and when your finished them don’t forget the daily entries and user submitted, ie- itv comps, magazine comps, the daily mail cottage etc etc, meanwhile Jude can make a start on writing out your postcard entries for you ready for you to fill in the answers. Sorry havn’t time to write anymore, i’ve comps to get entering, i’ve already lost a couple of days putting up crimbo decorations, can’t waste any more time lol.

TBH I never do the advents anymore. I have done in the past with limited wins, but comping has to be fun and I just find doing them stressful. I just potter along as usual 🙂

  • cath000

cant cope either!, Just trying to be selective with advent, few daily and then take a pick of what I can from long list each day. Fingers crossed.

  • poshpink

Tracker is great but there’s far too many comps to do so am being very selective and keeping toes and fingers crossed.

  • darcey09

I dont think that there are too many comps when there are so many people who would like so many different things .. I am definitely selective with advent comps, after all it is supposed to be fun and not a job! 🙂 Im avoiding Twitter though, just find it tedious and not very creative!
