Make a Day of #FreebieFriday on Twitter!

November 5th, 2010

Friday is a big day for compers who hang out on Twitter as it’s the day when a lot of brands run competitions. Some have dubbed it #FreebieFriday which is good news for compers, but not good for our poor @Loquax account trying to retweet the competitions to you.

Whilst we try and make sure we let you know of as many Friday Twitter competitions as possible we’re wary of over spamming and RTing plus we do have time limitations too. Remember we have a website to update too and we physically can’t cover Twitter and Facebook 24/7.

But to help you here’s a few useful ways of finding those competitions and getting involved.

Look out for sites with the #FreebieFriday in their Tweets. You’ll easily spot them as they have an endless stream of RTs in searches. The main sites are @zavvionline, @Sendit_com, @washbag_com, @mybagonline and @thehut_com (all run by the same company). Joining them are @GettingPersonal who also run giveaways every Tuesday and knitting retailer @Deramores.

If you’re in Lancashire keep an eye out for #GIVEAWAYFRIDAY from @VisitLancashire. They offer a localised prize every week so if you’re in the region make sure you’re following them.

@Cravendale have just launched a new weekly promotion for Fridays and they’re giving away 100 bottles of week every week until Christmas. You just have to retweet a message during midday and 3pm to be included in the draw.

If you fancy something more filling than just a bottle of milk then @giraffetweet from Giraffe Restaurants will be a good one to follow too. They run a #dinnerwinner competition every Friday and there’s a £40 meal for the lucky winner.

It’s a shame that there’s not a universal hashtag (an easy way to search twitter) for FreebieFriday! @SodaStreamUK for example have dubbed it #FizzyFriday – there’s a Sodastream up for grabs for one random tweeter. Meanwhile @polydorrecords have #polydorfriday and regularly giveaway CDs.

The big question many though will ask is it worth it?

Firstly if you’re not on Twitter during working hours then #FreebieFriday is going to probably pass you by! A lot of Twitter competitions tend to only have a short shelf life. If you do have access then 5/10 minutes of retweeting (posting the required message) could see you in the draw for a number of prizes.

The prizes on offer tend to be low value and that means entry levels vary from brand to brand. On a rough count we estimated 200 or so entries so far for the Sodastream competition.

Do people win? Yes they do! Some people find Twitter a good resource for small prizes – although lately there have been Take That tickets, a £400 jacket, mobile phones etc so it’s not all books and DVDs. A couple of compers have even won breaks and holidays so it’s worth a look.

Even if you’re still not keen five minutes of posting on a Friday could turn you day into a #FreebieFriday.
